Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko is holding a meeting with scientists and participants of Belarusian Antarctic expeditions, BelTA has learned.

The head of state has toured an exposition of domestic instruments and equipment for Belarusian expeditions, minerals and components of the Antarctic environment, samples of flora and fauna and other exhibits on polar research.

The president will be briefed on scientific research and the results of Belarusian Antarctic expeditions.

By the decision of the president, Belarus joined the Antarctic Treaty in 2006 and has been taking an active part in the research of this region since then. There are about 70 scientific stations of 30 countries in Antarctica, including the Belarusian Antarctic station Gora Vechernyaya. Since 2006,  Belarus has carried our 16 Antarctic expeditions. Fifty-one Belarusian scientists and specialists have  been to Antarctica, 22 of them twice or more times.

The scientific research in Antarctica is unique and of fundamental importance, since the processes taking place on this continent largely reflect the dynamics of the climate change and affect the conservation of biodiversity.
