Brest Oblast and the Republic of Tatarstan, the Russian Federation have signed an agreement on interregional cooperation. The agreement provides for interaction in trade, economic, scientific, technical, social, and cultural spheres. The arrangements were made during a meeting between Chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee Piotr Parkhomchik and Head of the Republic of Tatarstan Rustam Minnikhanov in the city of Kazan, the Brest Oblast Executive Committee told BelTA.

The sides discussed further steps for mutually beneficial cooperation at the interregional level and the implementation of joint projects. The meeting is intended to strengthen longstanding partnership ties, expand the horizons of industrial cooperation, and open up new opportunities for interaction between the two regions.

In the past five-year period trade turnover between Belarus and Tatarstan exceeded $290 million, and the relationship shows steady positive dynamics. As Piotr Parkhomchik noted, the Russian Federation is a key foreign trade partner for Brest Oblast and Belarus as a whole. In the last few years trade turnover with the Republic of Tatarstan grew by 123%. Key export items are cheeses, yogurts, fish products, polyesters, and accumulators. The key imports are rapeseed seeds, tires, polymers, packaging materials, and other goods.

The Belarusian side proposed organizing direct air links between Brest and Kazan. “Brest Airport has international status and is capable of receiving almost all types of aircraft, including cargo planes. We would be delighted to see Kazan as a destination on our airport’s information board. Given the mutual trade and economic interest as well as the high tourism potential of our regions, flights will be filled as much as possible from both sides,” added the chairman of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee.

The head of the Republic of Tatarstan remarked upon the safety and beauty of Belarus and expressed a desire to promote tourism links with the country. “In Tatarstan we highly value the opportunity to expand interaction with the Republic of Belarus and its regions. We are sincerely grateful to President Aleksandr Lukashenko for supporting all our initiatives and projects and for his kind attitude toward the republic,” said Rustam Minnikhanov.

A delegation from Brest Oblast visited key industrial enterprises of Tatarstan on 7 April: the main production facilities of the automobile giant KamAZ, Kazan Aviation Plant named after S.P. Gorbunov, and Kazan Helicopter Plant. Tomorrow’s official visit program includes a meeting between business circles of Belarus and Tatarstan at the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of the Republic of Tatarstan.
