Lukashenko instructs new rectors to restore order in universities

You will need to sort things out at the universities, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he approved the appointment of new rectors of Belarusian universities on 20 October, BelTA has learned.

“The universities have enough problems. When two women – two Natalyas [new rectors Natalya Karchevskaya and Natalya Lapteva] – were put forward as candidates, I could not help thinking: my God, how will they handle this? However, later I thought that women can sometimes deal with the mess better than men,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko noted that he is a ‘women's president' as he has always been supported by women. Moreover, he was brought up by a single mother. “This is why I have a special attitude towards women. I meant no disrespect when I said that a woman cannot be president. It was interpreted like this by others [opponents]. I respect you [women] mightily,” the president said.

In this regard, the president cited the career path of current head of the Belarus President Administration Igor Sergeyenko who previously worked in the State Security Committee. “He, a general of the State Security Committee, took up a new post. He already realizes that the job is not easy. Perhaps, now he understands what it is like – working as president. I want to stress – working. Many seem to think that this is some kind of a royal position: sitting and governing, ordering everyone around. Far from it – one must work hard,” the president noted.

Aleksandr Lukashenko promised the new rectors that he is ready to come to their universities at a word to discuss their issues and meet with students. “I am ready to come and together with you engage in a dialogue with students and explain our position. We do not have to give any excuses. We did what we could. Let others try to do better. We will soon give them this opportunity,” he said.

BelTA reported earlier that Natalya Karchevskaya, the former First Deputy Culture Minister, was appointed Rector of the Belarusian State University of Culture and Arts.

Natalya Lapteva will lead the Minsk State Linguistic University. She previously held the post of the Dean of the Germany Language Department at the university.

Aleksandr Bakhanovich is the new rector of the Brest State Technical University. He previously worked as deputy rector of the Belarusian National Technical University.
