The Belarusian side has taken note of information about another decision the USA made on 23 December 2020 to introduce additional visa restrictions and financial restrictions on Belarusian natural persons and legal ones, BelTA learned from a statement released by the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said: “We believe the decision is an emotional one and has nothing in common with the real state of affairs. Actions of American partners run contrary to their previously declared policy in favor of getting Belarus involved in interaction. The actions are in no way designed to support our country's independence.”

The source noted that “the dictatorship of human rights” enforced by Americans looks particularly inappropriate in view of the poor state of human rights in the USA.

“Sanctions represent an invariably useless and counterproductive tool. Nevertheless, our reciprocal measures have already been prepared and will be enforced. It is sad that the USA prefers confrontation over cooperation even in such obviously global challenges as fight against terrorism. But it is their choice. Belarus has always acted bearing in mind the importance of maintaining normal and mutually beneficial relations with the USA on the basis of equality and mutual respect. It is impossible to progress towards such relations while the United States sticks to the policy of pressure through sanctions,” the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs pointed out.
