Minsk Tractor Works was founded on May 29, 1946. In accordance with the resolution "On the construction of the Minsk Tractor Works", the Ministry of Agricultural Engineering of the USSR and the Council of Ministers of the BSSR have begun the construction of the Minsk Tractor Works with a capacity of 50 tracked tractors per day. The production launch date was designated 1948.
In 1948, there was indeed a launch, but not of a ready-made tractor, but of the first automatic processing line of the motor block head. In the same year, the first starting motor was assembled at MTZ.
In 1949, the factory workers completed the assembly of the first sample of a wheeled tractor of factory design. The chief designer of the Minsk Tractor Works Ivan Drong proposed to give the new car the iconic name "Belarus", which eventually became a real quality mark.
In 1953, the production of tractors already on pneumatic tires was launched, which determined the further specialization of the enterprise. Already in 1958, the Minsk Tractor Works produced a 100-thousandth tractor.
The plant's products have repeatedly won international competitions and exhibitions.
On August 1, 2014, MTZ-HOLDING was formed, which today includes 10 enterprises: Minsk Tractor Works, Bobruisk Tractor Parts and Aggregates Plant, Vitebsk Tractor Parts Plant, Minsk Gear Plant, Smorgon Aggregate Plant, Lepel Mechanical Repair Plant, Khoinik Hydraulic Equipment Plant, Narovlyansky Hydraulic Equipment Plant, Mozyr Machine-building Plant and Orsha Tool Plant.
Today, the holding's assortment includes more than 100 tractor models for all operating conditions. MTZ staff – more than 16,000 specialists.
