On February 16, a meeting of the joint board of the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of Belarus and the Ministry of Sports of Russia was held in Minsk on the basis of the Belarusian State University of Physical Culture.
Dmitry Mezentsev, State Secretary of the Union State, took part in the board.
Before the start of the event, Sergey Kovalchuk, Minister of Sports and Tourism, congratulated Mikhail Degtyarev, Head of the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, on his appointment as president of the Russian Olympic Committee.

Today, the leadership of the sports departments of the two countries discussed a number of topical issues on the bilateral agenda. One of the landmark joint sporting events of the year is the Cup of the strongest Russian and Belarusian Biathletes, which these days takes place on the ice tracks of the Belarusian Raubichi. Ahead are the competitions of the best skaters of Belarus and Russia, which will be hosted by the Minsk Arena.
From May to August, the Union State will host competitions in 15 sports as part of the Cup of the Strongest Athletes of Belarus and Russia.
State Secretary of the Union State Dmitry Mezentsev, speaking at the Board, called the work of the sports departments of Belarus and Russia an example for other ministries.
"We only want to welcome and feel this unity of the sporting spirit in your practical, successful organizational work," the Secretary of State wished those present.
Dmitry Mezentsev, speaking about the Union sports fest, proposed the creation of a working group to reform the Spartakiad of the Union State, a sporting event that has been held for young Belarusians and Russians in the sports arenas of the two countries since 2003.
"16,000 young amateur athletes took part in the competition program in 30 sports. 564 million Russian rubles have been allocated from the union budget," Dmitry Mezentsev said. – Taking into account the demand for a healthy lifestyle, modern aspirations and interests of Belarusian and Russian youth, I consider it necessary to propose to the Ministry of Sports and Tourism of the Republic of Belarus, together with the Ministry of Sports of the Russian Federation, with the direct participation of the Standing Committee of the Union State and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union of Belarus and Russia, to create a working group on reforming the Spartakiad into a new format sporting event with a revision of organizational approaches, structure, dates and program of the event in 2026", - The State Secretary of the Union State emphasized this.
He also noted that if his proposal finds a response, it will be a good opportunity to include new sports organizations, societies, universities and institutes, as well as physical education colleges in the participation in the Games. This step is especially important for the regions, Dmitry Mezentsev emphasized.
