Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Vladimir Karanik outlined the space projects Belarus is involved in at the first Russian Space Forum dedicated to the 65th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s flight in Moscow on 9 April, BelTA has learned.

Vladimir Karanik noted that Belarus has more than ten years of experience in developing Earth remote-sensing satellites. At present, together with the Roscosmos state corporation, work is underway on an ultra-high-resolution satellite with a resolution of 0.35 meters. “This is a new and ambitious spacecraft. I am confident that we will succeed, because this work builds on strong traditions and the results demonstrated in previous series and earlier models,” he said.

“We are also participating in the lunar program with our developments in multilayer protection, as well as systems for nuclear power and nuclear propulsion. I believe this work will help bring closer, if only by a step, the moment when a person can safely set foot on the Moon and work there,” Vladimir Karanik noted.

“In reality, space, believe me as someone with a medical background, is an absolutely hostile environment for humans: no air, extreme temperature fluctuations, intense radiation. It was long believed that a human simply could not survive there. Sixty-five years ago, space saw the first person who managed to rise above Earth’s gravity and return safely. Today it is a workplace for many people, but space has not become any safer. These challenges, in my view, require the combined resources of the entire planet. Technologically, we are probably capable of contributing even more to space development,” he said.

“Our level of cooperation with Roscosmos allows a country that does not have its own launch facilities or carrier rockets to actively participate in space exploration. We value this greatly. This cooperation helps identify new areas of common interest and new ambitious tasks that, I believe, we will tackle together,” he added.
