The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Rosatom state Corporation are discussing the construction of a research reactor at the Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research - Sosny, Deputy Director General for Scientific Work of the Institute Tamara Korbut said at a conference in Minsk.

The parties signed a memorandum of cooperation and developed the basic technical requirements for the center based on a multi-purpose research reactor. "The path from a promising project to practical implementation is quite complicated, requires serious funding and the active participation of high-class specialists and experts from Belarus and Russia," Tamara Korbut stressed.

"Nuclear technologies are increasingly finding non-energy applications. One of the promising areas is research reactors, which are used for education and training, isotope production, neutron activation analysis, neutron imaging, in matters related to materials science. Isotopes developed in the research reactor can be used in the diagnosis and treatment of cancer. The National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and the Rosatom state Corporation are discussing the construction of a research reactor based on the Joint Institute for Energy and Nuclear Research - Sosny," the speaker explained.
