Minister explains major goals for Belarusian agriculture

Growing new promising crops for import substitution and their deep processing is an important strategic task for Belarusian agriculture, Economy Minister Yuri Chebotar said at a joint meeting of the board of the Economy Ministry and the State Committee on Science and Technology (SCST) with the participation of representatives of the Agriculture and Food Ministry. The meeting discussed the draft strategy for the development of agriculture, fishing activities and food production until 2035, BelTA learned from the press service of the Economy Ministry.

According to the economy minister, the sector's prospects are associated with the growth of production and exports, effective import substitution through strengthening the domestic raw material base.

“Agriculture is a solid foundation of the country's food security. To maintain its competitiveness on the long-term track, all existing areas of agricultural production should receive an impetus to development. There should be no inconsistencies in the planning of indicators. For example, the growth of indicators in animal husbandry should provide for comparable dynamics of the fodder base,” Yuri Chebotar said.

Another strategic task is the cultivation of new promising crops for import substitution and their deep processing, he said. “This will create prerequisites for the development of new production chains in pharmaceuticals, light and food industries and an increase in the output of high value-added domestic goods in demand both in the domestic and foreign markets,” the minister added.
