Anatoly Sobchak was the initiator of returning St. Petersburg to its historical name and did his best to return not only the name, but also the glory, Vladimir Putin said in his speech to the audience. The Russian leader recalled the politician's great contribution to the development of the cultural capital of the Russian Federation.

Also on that day, the Russian president laid flowers at the monument to Anatoly Sobchak on Vasilyevsky Island in St Petersburg. The monument was installed in 2006 in the park near the Law Faculty of St. Petersburg State University.
