Belarus bids farewell to the legend of world sports Alexander Medved

On September 4, the Palace of Sport in Minsk hosted a farewell ceremony for the legendary Belarusian freestyle wrestler, three-time Olympic champion, multiple champion of the world, Europe and the Soviet Union, Honored Master of Sports Alexander Medved. 

A wreath from the Standing Committee of the Union State was delivered to the funeral ceremony.

“In the memory of the Belarusian people Alexander Vasilyevich will forever remain as the embodiment of strength, wisdom and patriotism,” reads the condolence message from the head of state to the family and friends of the best Belarusian athlete of the twentieth century. The President of Belarus emphasized Alexander Medved's invaluable contribution to the development of the national wrestling school and the Olympic movement. 

Alexander Medved was known and loved not only in Belarus, but also far beyond its borders. For more than fifty years, prestigious international freestyle wrestling tournaments were associated with his name. Alexander Medved was the flag bearer of the Belarusian Olympic team at the Athens Games, and earlier at the opening of the Olympics in Moscow he was honored to read the Olympic Oath on behalf of the judges. Minsk awarded him the title of honorary citizen of the city. 

Alexander Medved left numerous students - for many years he was the coach of the Belarusian Olympic freestyle wrestling team, published more than 60 scientific, scientific-methodical and educational works, published two books.

The heads of state administration bodies, famous athletes, national teams of various sports, his relatives and friends, as well as a large number of sports fans and residents of the Belarusian capital came to say goodbye to the great Belarusian wrestler.

A wreath from the Standing Committee of the Union State was delivered to the farewell ceremony.

The staff of the Representation of the Permanent Committee of the Union State in Minsk, headed by its Head, bid farewell to the legendary sportsman.
