Specialist: ‘the Japanese Garden’ exposition is highly appreciated by visitors

Today, journalists visited the exposition ‘The Japanese Garden’ as a part of the off-site event at the Central Botanical Garden of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. According to a correspondent of the Soyuz.by portal, a landscape architect Tamara Shpitalnaya spoke about the garden’s main features and things that attract visitors to the garden the most.

‘The ‘The Japanese Garden’ has a collection of plants (about 300) that showcase the flora of the Far East and Southeast Asia. That is why, after all, it is called the ‘Oriental Garden’. The difficulty in implementing this idea was that our region is in the fifth climatic zone, while Japan and China are in the ninth. Therefore, it was necessary to thoroughly select plants that can behave well in our climate,’ said Tamara Shpitalnaya.
According to her words, the idea to create such a garden appeared a long time ago. A group consisting of a sculptor, an architect, designers, and a landscape designer is working on the project. ‘We made this exposition and then started to fulfil it. First, we did the walkways, then we did the backfilling. We had designs sketches for the entrance gate, the tea pavilion. We also had the help of a sponsor who funded the construction of the pavilion, gates, that is, small architectural elements.’
The purpose of the Japanese Garden is to present a small landscape composition that showcases not just plants, but also the gardening techniques of another culture. ‘Oriental gardens, they are of course world-renowned, they are very different from European gardens and our local ones. That's why, in fact, there is a very large flow of visitors coming here,’ the landscape designer noted.
She also added that at the moment the exposition is not completely ready: the lawn is to be sown and the collection of plants is to be enriched.
