Gomel to host Belarus-Russia seminar on Chernobyl consequences

A meeting of the permanent seminar under the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State dedicated to overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident will be held in Gomel on 29-30 April, the press service of the Parliamentary Assembly told BelTA.

“During the seminar, participants will examine the long-term cooperation between Belarus and Russia on radiation safety and the remediation of territories impacted by radioactive contamination. Particular attention will be paid to the results of state and Union State  programs aimed at overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl accident. During the meeting, seminar participants will discuss prospects for the social and economic development of the affected regions, social protection and support measures for citizens, medical care and health improvement of the population, current challenges of environmental rehabilitation of territories, and minimizing the long-term effects of radiation exposure,” the press service said.
 
The participants will also discuss legislative coordination in nuclear energy use and development, along with international experience and scientific support in this area. The meeting will result in a document outlining practical recommendations for developing the affected territories. 
 
Representatives of the ministries of emergency situations, energy, forestry of Belarus, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment of the Russian Federation, and research centers specializing in overcoming the consequences of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant accident were invited.
 
The permanent seminar under the Parliamentary Assembly of the Belarus-Russia Union State was established on the initiative of union parliamentarians in 2006. Traditionally, the seminar brings together representatives of scientific circles from Belarus and Russia. The format of the event makes it possible to examine in detail pressing matters of cooperation between Belarus and Russia within the framework of the Union State.
