Putin calls for considering resumption of SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group's work

12:39, 17 September

The developments in Afghanistan have created conditions for the resumption of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) - Afghanistan Contact Group's work, Russian President Vladimir Putin said on Friday, addressing the Dushanbe-hosted Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit via video link.

"We could consider resuming the activities of the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group, which was created earlier precisely for cooperation with Afghan partners," he pointed out.

Putin emphasized that the pattern of joint actions aimed at promptly responding to threats coming from Afghanistan had been thoroughly discussed at a meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) Collective Security Committee on September 16. The Russian president stressed that Moscow was interested in making sure that other SCO members understand and support the decisions made at the meeting.

"This is why I believe that the initiative to hold a joint meeting of the SCO and CSTO leaders is quite relevant and useful," Putin said, adding that it would allow the two organizations to discuss issues related to practical cooperation on Afghanistan, as well as to ensure coordination based on their powers.
