Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko commented on the fight against fake news about coronavirus on the Internet at a meeting to discuss the situation with COVID-19 in Belarus on 19 October, BelTA has learned.

Aleksandr Lukashenko pointed to the situation in the United States and Europe, especially Belarus' neighbors. “All enlightened Europe keeps silence now: no information, everything is ‘fine'. But there is a catastrophe there. Take Latvia: a country with slightly over 1 million population and the situation is a hundred times worse than in Belarus. Silence there. Do you remember the death numbers in the United States during the first wave? Are they doing well now? Who knows how things are in the United States today? Have they wised up? They, however, keep providing our protesters with money, resources in an attempt to destroy Belarus, overthrow the government at these anti-COVID events. If you do not see that, then listen to what I say,” the head of state added.

“If you live on the Internet, Lord be with you. Remdesivir [an anti-viral medication] will not help you. You must understand that the Internet has become a political battlefield. If you live there, it's not going to do you any good,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president stressed that by spreading fake news and rumors about the situation in Belarus foreign opponents want to rock the boat. “Indeed, the situation is tense, and people become nervous,” the head of state said. “Therefore, people need competent assessments of the situation. That is why we have gathered together today. We need to lay out approaches on the basis of existing laws.”
