Plans to increase age of presidential candidacy to 40 years in Belarus

There are plans to increase the age of candidacy in Belarus presidential elections to 40 years, Chairman of the Constitutional Commission, Chairman of the Constitutional Court Piotr Miklashevich said on 21 July, BelTA has learned.

"It is proposed to preserve the presidential form of government, which will be formalized in the section “President. Parliament. Government”. In line with the proposal, a presidential candidate must be 40 years of age or older, a resident for at least 20 years prior to elections and not have foreign citizenship,” Piotr Miklashevich said.

At the moment, to run for presidency, one must be a natural born citizen of the Republic of Belarus, 35 years of age or older, eligible to vote and a resident for 10 years prior to election.

The 9th meeting of the Constitutional Commission took place on 21 July. The meeting reviewed the work of the Constitutional Commission to develop proposals to amend the Constitution of the Republic of Belarus.
